Great audio names in the consumer field were often pro gear manufacturers first. Think of Altec, JBL, Bryston, Crown, TAD, etc. Pro gear pays less attention to cosmetics and more towards reliability and functionality. Like many other products, there are dogs out there, too, but the larger pro companies are quite conscientious about their products. Unlike most consumer oriented companies, once in production, they tend to keep that product available for several years, so they are willing to spend more in their initial design.
