Why eliminate Firewire?

I'm not clear why this is a limitation. There are some USB2.0 devices out there but you are limiting yourself to some decent, reasonably priced gear in this way.

I'm using the Presonus Firepod and have had good success with my laptop doing 8 channels of analog in at the same time with this setup.

I have no experience with either of the devices you're referencing, however.
