Bill- Here's the other side: 4th order vented boxes with front-loaded 18" drivers sell because they're more compact and cheaper to buy (or easier to build) than large, complex horns for the same driver. Plus, being simply front-loaded, the 18" diameter moves more air than its 15" counterpart in almost the same box volume (for many drivers). In the end, the average weekend soundtech sees a box which they can lift or truck easily, and delivers the range & power handling they need for small/medium venues. In the past, I've never needed more than 2 per side for big bass at most gigs, and often only a pair would have been enough. Although, lately, I've been interested in 15" cones for sub duty because the cone is generally lighter, having a quicker response to the input signal (hence, my purchase of your DR15 plans a while back). I expect that 18" cones will be around for a while longer!
