Dan, if you are using some sort of off-brand plate amp with adjustable gain and crossover on your sub, I suggest you start looking into something else. I did a measurement on my plate amps and found at around 40 to 60 Hz there is a 12db boost that to me made the bass sound rather slow and muddy.
I've replaced mine with a vintage 80's Dahlquist LP-1 subwoofer X-over on my old Quicksilver 90W PP mono blcoks(I got 2 subs) and let me tell ya, what a revelation!
