Foobar Player, ASIO, & USB DAC tutorial/setup

SeVeReD's Foobar Player, ASIO, & Stello USB DAC tutorial... Just because this is too easy but was hell to find the info for simple ol me. I am still a noob, so I sure hope people chime in here as they see mistake/improvements. I'll add to here as I learn.

The above link to TigerDirect is where I bought the laptop. Still an ok price I guess, though I think I've been ripped off of the rebate :/Acer AS9502WSMi Pentium M 1.73GHz / 17-Inch / 512MB / 100GB / DVD±RW DL / Windows XP Home Notebook PC This is the laptop I picked up to record/playback the music. I also have a couple of 300 GB External HD. Will keep adding them as I find them on sale and the need arises. I'm hoping playing in battery mode will prove to be a benefit, still listening. The laptop is dead quiet no fan noise.

Ok next go to the above link and buy yourself a Stello DA100 USB DAC. hehe Just kidding this is where I've started and I'm getting more and more impressed with the unit. But that's another thread. I ordered the Stello on a Sunday afternoon and by Tuesday morning it had arrived. I think that's a record in shipping for me.

Next I went here and downloaded foobar2000 the special edition foobar2000_special.exe Install it on your computer. I will assume you will install to default directories.
+/- control volume...If you have a preamp you can take out the vol control later under preferences.

Go here look for and download the program CPU-Z You'll need cpuz.exe to figure out what asio dll to use. Run this program. Look under the CPU tab for what Instructions your computer does, SSE, SSE2, or neither. If neither are present then I guess you will just use the "normal" asio dll. Just note on a paper what Instructions you see and go on to below.

http://otachan.com/

This is where I downloaded the foobar asio component. I downloaded foo_output_asio(exe)_053.2.7z I extracted all of the zip to C:\Program Files\foobar2000\components; there are no instructions in English, but it worked for me by installing all in components. Next you have to go to C:\Program Files\foobar2000\components\bin and take out two of the folders and leave in the one that CPU-Z program from above specified what Instructions your computer runs. So you need to take out two of these and leave in the other, either the directory; Normal, SSE, or SSE2. For my laptop it uses SSE2 instructions so I left that folder in and took out/deleted the other two.

Now start up Foobar2000. Click on the Foobar2000 tab on the top > Preferences. You get the Preferences window.
Click on "Core" on left side of menu; On the bottom slide "Process priority class" all the way to the right to show "realtime".
Scroll down left side and click Playback; on the right side then, Disable "Replaygain", set "Output data format:" to 32bit fixed-point... ( I had to do this to get output to Stello; I don't know). "Playback thread priority" is set to max.
Scroll down left side to "Output". For "Output method" select ASIO (dll version). "go to settings" button or below "Output" on left margin you'll see "ASIO (dll version)", click it (either way will get you there). Under "Device" If you see your usb device (i didn't) select it and then select "Thread priority:" "Time critical" Back outta preferences. Try playing some music using Foobar2000. It doesn't work??!!!!!??? boohoo... it didn't for me either.

Next go here and install A4Av2Ins.exe. Open "ASIO4ALL v2 Off-Line Settings" It's a program loaded on when you installed asio4all. You should see "USB Audio Device" or your unit and a green icon next to it showing it's running. Click on Advanced and I have all boxes unchecked. Exit.

Now start up Foobar and go to Preferences again > Output > ASIO (dll version) and in "Device" select ASIO4ALL v2. yea back out and play some music I hope :).

(go to bottom of list and select Surround DSP for download) foo_dsp_surr.zip Install this in your components directory to have a "phase reversal" under Preferences>DSP Manager. Here you can enable (reverse) and disable (off/normal) on the fly to hear phase differences.
