hard drives are inexpensive

With hard drive cost at an all time low (today I saw a 2TB drive for $135 after rebate), why use compression? If you have a CD collection of 1000 discs, that's around 600GB in the .wav or .aif format. The 1TB drives are going for about $70 these days (mostly after rebate), so there's your collection, uncompressed, on one hard drive. Buy a second one for backup and you're only at $140. Putting that into perspective, some people spend more $ on a single cable.

And even if you have a budding High Resolution collection, just buy two 2TB drives.
