Have you tried to compare this with the sound of your internal (boot) drive? I'd be interested to know if your observation (or anyone else's)is in accord with mine.
I have found that externally powered usb and firewire drives sound different depending on whehter the USB or FW power supply buses are disabled. I have also heard sonic changes depending on the make of the external drive housing. I use only 5V 2.5 in drives.
This is yet another example of the incorrect bits are bits doctrine. The right doctrine is bits + timing, however the latter is affected.
