Yes the different SB3 firmware versions sound different. When in max volume (bit perfect mode) the differences are subtle but there. There have been significant differences in how digital volume control is implemented between versions which does make a fairly obvious difference. The current firmware seems to do the digital volume control much better than previous versions.
Based on my experience with other linux boxes my guess is that there is going to be a greater difference between firmware versions than there was with the SB3. With the greater processor power comes the possibility of significant differences in how a certain function can be implemented from one version to the next. On the SB3 resources were much scarcer which lent to much fewer possible implementations.
