I've had something like 30 different firmware versions on it, I have not been keeping track of sonic differences. I have not noticed glaring differences in sound between them (except for the one that constantly stuttered, but they fixed that right away)
The architecture is definitely different than the SB3, there is a separate player and controler. You can control the player from anything and the controler can control anything. The major difference between this and MPD is MPD is designed to play local files, or mounted shares (so they look like local files) but the squeeze player is designed to play a special network stream.
