B,

Looking for sound quality and ease of use

My recommendation is that you go down the cmp2 path. You ALREADY have the correct card installed, have been able to follow a guide to tweeking the OS, and are now looking for a new player.

Dude, you have what it takes to do most of the cmp2 mods!

Vista is an issue, BUT there are a few posters who have done most if not all of the changes to a Vista platform. XP would be better, but you could do it on Vista and there would be someone to help. And I bet your computer manufacturer would let you downgrade to xp.

The only thing I see missing is how you actually ripped your music. Cmp2 is predicated on cue sheets. IIRC you were ripping to .wav or flac? If so, and you dont have cue sheets, Alan Jordan has an awesome program that can quickly make cue sheets.

Anyhow, I tried all kinds of players: winamp, foobar, wavelab, xm player, multistream ASIO player, samplitude, album player, jriver, acxo player, and others like itunes, wmp, etc.

Cplay which Cmp2 is predicated on, is IMHO the best sounding and when combined with cmp, the gui is very simple to use and operate. Cplay on its own is not the best gui, but it is workable.

The thing is that you can mess around as I did for years and pretty much make small improvements. But cmp2 is where a ton of inmates have ended up, and why that thread and the cplay thread are the longest and most posted threads on the WHOLE asylum with over 3 THOUSAND posts.

An example that echoes my own was that of an inmate who posted as M Schneider or something like that. IIRC, he started out with Foobar and I recommended Album player to him and he ended up with cplay.

So you can just go to the end, but if you HAVE to mess with everything yourself, you COULD download the trial of Album Player at albumplayer.com.

Back when I was chasing pretty pictures, I found it to be a step up from foobar and winamp yet have a decent and pretty album based gui. The asio setup on it is one of the easiest out there, just check the box...no dicking around with 3rd party downloads and mapping like Foobar has you do. That alone will probably help the sound.
