I recently bought a Samsung NC10 netbook with a view to donating it to audio service. To whit I also bought an E-Mu 0404usb, downloaded J River and managed to get ASIO working. I also have an external CD/DVD writer as there's no room for such things within the netbook's little body.
First off - I'm very pleased with the results. Surprisingly pleased. I initially ripped 50 or so cd's (wav) to hard drive and first impressions were more than promising. As I'm working away from home this week I carted the whole lot with me - knowing that I would be staying with a friend who has a modest system.
Second off - This setup comfrtably saw off his Cambridge Audio CD5 (hardly surprising considering the E-Mu alone cost more than his player - but comforting nevertheless).
But there's an oddity!
I had been using a trial version of JR Media Centre and realised that as I was only interested in the audio bit (at least in the meanwhile) I could save myself some money by just using the JR Media Jukebox - download for free then uninstall Media Centre.
As an aside, my thriftiness has cost me. In the process, presumably a tagging issue - still something I haven't managed to get my head around - my albums are now individual tracks with no artwork and an inability to play gaplessly. Hey Ho!
Whilst here I have also taken advantage of my friend's cd collection (anything I like I will also buy myself) and ripped a few of these, but being aware of available drive space I thought I'd give FLAC a go.
And guess what? The current rips don't sound as good as my initial rips - less exciting and atmospheric. Unless I'm missing something, the only 2 variables are J River - from Media Centre (13 - trial) to Jukebox (12) and wav to flac.
Which is the more likely cause of my SQ drop? And why?
Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Andy
