I had good success with the EMU 1616M, this has a stand alone box with most of the electronics (ADCs, Dacs, etc...) connected by a proprietary cable (looks like a CAT6) to either a PCMICA card for a laptop, or a PCI card for a desktop. This keeps the electronics well away from the PC, and allows for a short run to the phono pre. The unit uses the SOTA AKM ADCs and can record at very high resolution. I had great success recording at 32/176k using WaveLab 6.0.
You can resample these archive recording to 16/44 if you need to.
Good Luck!
