thanks for the input.

a laptop (mac or otherwise) seems like it would be ideal -- and it would be ideal if this were the only thing i needed to do with it.

as such, i own a PC laptop, which is old and underpowered for this task. also, i need the new computer for editing HD video. that means that a laptop is really not appropriate, overall because the ones i've seen that could handle that task are either very expensive, still underpowered, maxed-out from the get-go (e.g., with RAM), and not sufficiently expandable.

bummer that the apogee duet will require adapter plugs.
