Ordinary rubber bands are no use - they are the ones that disintegrate, even without heat. I'm trying it with the kind of elastic used in clothing - a bit more robust, but we'll see. I've used DTemp, but switched to Speedfan because it gives CPU and HDD temps, but even in the Scythe box, I don't get temps over 40 - maybe the Samsung runs cool, but the suspension allows more air around the drive, so I hope that helps as well.
