I agree that after-market HDD mounts are not cheap and not always totally effective and, like you, tried elastic. For 2.5" HDDs, I use elastic bands and find that silencing is total and that temperatures stay well below 30 degrees C.
When I mentioned this in an earlier post, J.Mac warned that the bands "tend to dry out and disintegrate within a few months". This is true of most types but not with the ones I use. However, I don't know enough about elastic bands to say what kind they are except that they are (obligingly) left on the doorstep about twice a week by the British postal service.
3.5" HDDs (as used in a workstation, not an audio PC) not only need stronger elastic but temperatures quickly rise to over 40 degrees C. Silencing is effective but temperatures are too high for safety so I use a "Zalman ZM-2HC2 Heatpipe Cooler" instead with a 12cm, 12v fan resting on top and running on 5v. It's inaudible from a metre away even with the case open and temperatures stay below 30 degrees C.
YMMV. The link is to DTemp, a monitoring utility which seems to work well.
