Since you mentioned Apogee gear, I would suggest that you look into their Duet since you will be doing two channel recording. Supposedly the ADC is almost as good as that on the Rosetta. I use a Presonus Firebox to record my vinyl, and the results are quite good; however, if I were to do it over, I would probably go with the Duet. It also supposedly has an excellent DAC, so you could also use it as a device to play your recordings back directly from your hard drive.

The Duet is right around $500 and is a Firewire device and only talks to Mac systems.

As far as connecting it via a long cable to your system, I know there are length restrictions for usb; I don't know about Firewire.
