Hi!
I'm wondering if anyone can propose either a better or cheaper (or, ideally, both) solution to my challenge.
The question:
Does anyone have a good solution for locating an A/D device close to a music system, which can then output firewire or USB (to be run about 40') to a computer? [I'm assuming that outputting via firewire or USB will be more immune to jitter/errors than a long S/PDIF run.]
The full scenario - what I've got and what I've considered so far:
I've got a ton of vinyl at home and am now doing a community radio show where I want to showcase some of it. Instead of dragging it all to the station and playing it on less-than-ideal conditions, I'd like to record it at home first. This will enable me to transport it easily, and I'll also have it logged for those times where I want to hear a track but don't want to fire up the turntable.
I currently have an Alesis ML-9600. While it's pretty good, the problem is that I must burn to CD-R in order to work with in on a computer. Also, I find it not terribly ideal to have to sit around and mark tracks while recording -- or to go back afterwards and scrub tracks.
I would prefer to record one album side directly to PC. Recording would require minimal attention, and I think editing would be faster (splitting tracks + minor clean-up). Unfortunately, my nice TT/audio gear is in another room -- about 40 feet from where I'd locate the computer.
40 feet seems too great a distance to run the cables from the Alesis...and then I'm not sure what I'd plug them into.
I see that the Apogee Rosetta 200 seems quite good....except that it requires balanced inputs (my phono stage has unbalanced outputs only). It's also quite pricey.
I'm about to purchase a new Mac Pro computer, so I'll have plenty of computing power.
I don't really want to put the computer near the audio gear (due to noise issues -- and 98% of the stuff I will do with the computer will not be audio-related).
Should I just suck it up and use the Alesis? Do I have to plunk down $1,700+ for the Rosetta?
Is there something else to consider?
Thank you!
