If the problem CDs are pressed or burned from reputable sources and if they are visibly undamaged, then I agree with you. Replace the drive if it is under warrenty.
There are other alternatives as well. One can use special ripping software that repeatedly retries until it gets a good result. I use EAC on my PC's for this purpose. I am not familiar with software for the MAC. This may help read a particular disk.
