HiRes (24/88.2 onwards) is a better choice should the option be available.
However 16/44.1 when upsampled correctly gives results that is very analogue like as you are experiencing with HiRes, i.e. warmth, detail, ambience, dynamics & energy. 16/44.1 recordings when done with correct dithering and noise shaping gets even better. I'm not suggesting 16/44.1 is perfect but rather it can do much of what you hearing with HiRes. I have some wonderful 16/44.1 tracks of sitar music which is rendered with amazing perfection recreating all the subtle nuances, transients and rich harmonics... much like the live event.
Blue Smoke 'Black Box' uses standard computer components (Dual Core CPU, 1GB+ RAM, Windows Vista) and stores music on a NAS. Any idea on the audio player and upsampler used in the 'Black Box'?
