The point should be to demand higher resolution audio than 16/44.1. Only if consumers demand it will there be any chance it becomes available. With the advent of consumer computer based playback systems, the resolution of albums is no longer tied to new hardware purchases, and all the problems inherent on hardware dependent playback (format wars, etc).
Consider how many albums have been re-mastered in the last ten years, and how many new albums have been produced in the same time period. Now, consider that virtually all of this music is archived at 24/88.2 or 24/96 in the vaults of the record companies. Now imagine a time when the record companies realize that they can re-sell this music, either as downloads, or as packaged media on DVDs (RAW wav files) ala Reference Recordings-suddenly the amount of music available in high resolution becomes huge.
Everyone should stand up and let the music business folks know, that 16/44.1 is inadequate, and the least resolution we want to put up with.
