Ah, not an audiophile huh?

Whatever the medium, there are always some that I love because they are sonically thrilling recordings of a good performance. Others that are an adequate recording of a thrilling performance. Then there's all the rest, most of which are adequate and some garbage. But there are a few that are outstanding recordings of thrilling performances and those are the only reasons to be an audiophile.

While it takes both performance and sound, bad sound compromises all performances. So... The logical thing in my book is to have a robust enough recording system that it becomes difficult to make a really bad one. And that means decent margins. LP's were crap, margin wise, and CD's better, maybe on the same level as 45's. The higher resolution solutions that you dismiss have the potential of great recordings without having to have every star in perfect alignment as it's the only solution that addresses the actual needs of the performance and listener rather than the petulant limits of the recording medium.
