I don't disagree with you here, Tony.

but I guess I don't see why high res should be THE aim of PC audio.

At least as I see it, 'PC audio' is about playback - getting the
most out of what is available, no matter the sampling rate or bit depth.
If we just dropped red book now as being 'inferior',
how would that be any different than if we had dropped vinyl
at the first utterance of 'perfect sound forever'?
