Well, after a lot of fits and starts, and a lot of cash, I finally have a system that I can be happy with for the forseeable future. For those that care, I have PC-based server put together by a company called Blue-Smoke, and I've settled on a MSB DAC , the Platinum 3. In my system, it bettered the new Berkely, which I sold for minimal loss.
I can now really hear the difference between the 2 hi-res recordings that I have, the Stones and Norah Jones (she's really insipid, but it's slim pickin's).
The high-res recodrings have warmth , detail and ambience. What the Redbook is missing is that last bit of detail. Don't get me wrong. The combo is truly better thatn anything else I've had before. There's the sense of weight and solidity that peolple talk about, as well as the type of dynamics that can hit you in the chest with the right recording.
Botttom line is, I WANT MORE.Please comnaies , bring it on. I joined the Chesky HDtracks, but nothing there the last time I checked. For now, it's musicgaints. I did buy the DAD of the Weavers to try to rip it to my computer. We'll see how that goes.
