however the aiff format also stores all the metadata. So aiff is a convenience for sure, and this is what I use on my (ancient) 450MHz G4 Cube.

So use the aiff encoder, in that case, and make sure you have error correction turned on. Then you're good to go.

Why not try out Apple Lossless also and compare it to the aiff rendering? If they sound the same to you on your set up then all the better as these use less disk space. Also, as lossless contains all the original data, these can be converted to aiff in the future if you so choose.
