Do you really want a noisy computer in the same room when you are listening to music? For many the answer is of course no and the solution is either expensive silent general purpose computers or cheaper specialized computers like a squeezebox.
Putting one of your old computers in another room, using a squeezebox to access your music files (Linux/Windows/Mac) wirelessly and connecting the squeezebox to powered monitors is a neat compact package. The sound quality will be dominated by the choice of speakers and if you have been used to reasonable hi-fi speakers I would be very surprised if you could live with tiny desktop monitors.
If the budget is around 1k, I would suggest perhaps a squeezebox + ADAM A7 powered monitors but what I appreciate in a speaker may not be what you appreciate. The squeezebox is usually controlled from a computer or the supplied zapper but the software is open source and so your phone might be an option.
