Actually, even with the WAV files, both on my PC and transferred to the Squeezebox as WAV, the tags are certainly there, as all the cover art, artist info, CD names etc come through and show up just fine on my handheld controller. Maybe Vista through windows Media Server is doing the job right with WAV tags. I tried sending files as WAV and as FLAC to the Squeezebos, and thought the WAV files sounded better. I'm about to buy a 2 terrabyte network attached disk drive, so WAV is just fine.
