I ordered and installed the VDC-9.0 upgrade power suypply from Channel Islands Audio costing $279, and it improved the quality of the Squeezebox sound enormously. Muddy bass is now clear and tuneful; tizzy trebles are now crystal clear. The sound is more dynamic and sure, more atmospheric, and the soundstage is much more stable and deep. Where the Squeezebox originally sounded like a good but cheap CD player, now it bests my modified Shanling and AMC CD rigs. The sound improved equally through either the digital output to my AMC DAC9, or directly to my preamp through it's RCA analog outputs. In extensive A/B testing comparing the digital coax/DAC9 sound to the analog sound, I was very hard pressed to tell the difference. Maye the tubed DAC sounds a littel richer, but not on all music, and I think the Squeezebox analog outputs are a bit more detailed than the DAC. Needless to say, I'm delighted, as this upgrade has truely realized the hoped for quality I've been working towards since I started using my computer for music. I love it. Highly recommended.
Dell Vostro, music stored and transmitted as WAV files (important, best way as the Squeezebox accepts WAV nativly, and sounds a lot better that way than as FLAC files), Conrad Johnson Premier 17LSII preamp, Theta Dreadnaught amp, Aerial Accoustics 20T's, Synergistic Research cables and power system.
