Yes, my experience is that it is a lot of work to get cover art and store it where your player will use it.

If you want to use an older computer, the best (and only) strategy is to use it as a dedicated music machine. Reformat the drive and install the absolute minimum of software that you need. Disable Windows services you won't need -- check out Black Viper for advice in this regard. Preventing Internet access so you don't need anti-virus is a good idea except, of course, you then can't directly access Freedb or GraceNote to get record information.

Personally I got into PC audio for the convenience more than the sound quality or to save money -- although you call me on that given the effort I've expended to obtain and record tag info, including cover art. Certainly you can buy a decent CDP for less than the cost of a new computer plus DAC.
