Question about audio streaming with PC

I have been listening to the audio stream of my favorite fm radio station with my computer for a few months. Every once in a while there is a noise that comes through from the computer that sounds sort of like a gun shot ricochet sound effect. At first I thought is was a signal that an email had come in, but it definitely not that. Can anyone tell me what this might be and how it can be prevented?
