I have no idea, but I use an Apogee Mini-DAC over firewire, and a 750GB HDD over the same firewire link. I had no issues so far (more than a year daily operations), no drop outs nor anything else.

I can't comment whether this is the best compared to anything else or so.

What I like is the level of integration between the MAC OS and the external firewire devices, something I have never seen in my windows based computers. The females in my household use the dedicated MAC music computer daily, and have never managed to bring it to a standstill, which I believe is the ultimate acid test.
