I doubt that two wire connection is much better than single wire, except when you are pushing up sampling frequency. The aes 16 is not bad, but it is not that great either without relocking. Your Big Ben can do it.

It seems to me that the sonic change may be due to

1. The aes16 being a better card than the L22 and
2. The interface change from 75R to 110R togeher with the cable change. the 110R interface is actually not that great when it comes to discontinuity and reflections compared to 75R bnc.
