MacBook, Mac Mini or Slim Devices and questions?

I see the popularity and supposed performance advantage of using the mac portables for minis for a front end into a dac.

Is their any benefit to using the USB ouput versus the optical output into an external dac? I see that all the models except the Air have optical out and USB.

Whatis the audio performance advantage of using a MacBook or Mini as a transport versus a Duet , SB3 or Transport if using an external dac (in my case a Theta Gen VIII)

Any comments or suggestions would be very much appreciated.
(I know that I would have to use a USB converter like the BC Thingy if using USB ouput on a Mac into my Theta. The Duet or SB3 can output SPDIF to the Theta)
