This unit has a very small switch to operate off rechargeable AAA batteries or usb 5v. There is a LED to indicate status. I think I have only recharged 1 time. One of my server's usb 5v stays on when computer is powered off and the usb 5v recharges the AAA batteries. I really do think that this unit improves the sound of usb by isolating the computer's noise from the dac. Tried this with both music servers and more that one usb cable.
