I also used to use a USB extension cable. It seemed to work fine, but when I switched to the fiber optic cable my sound improved dramatically: greater clarity, more presence, more nuance (it was more than I have gotten through many component upgrades). This is why I'm upset that my Opticus is flaking out. As far as I can tell it's the only solution for a long run (except for a Squeeze Box), which I use for my whole-house system.
