Hi,

At Dawnrazor's prompting I'll chime in. I've used both the Lynx 2B and the M-Audio Delta 410 for PC crossover duties at different times. The Lynx has a low enough output impedance to directly drive any amplifier I've tried it with, although you lose a bit of dynamics if you have to lower the volume a substantial amount digitally. The Lynx has a more detailed sound than the M-Audio.

There are ways to set up a PC crossover so that all sounds generated from the PC will go through the crossover. I've used the Thuneau Allocator as a crossover with both the Lynx and the M-Audio. The Thuneau Allocator sounds very good compared to my active Marchand crossover, plus it is far more flexible. The problem with using a PC as a crossover, or any digital crossover, is that you have to do an A to D conversion if you use any other analog sources. However, the ADC on the Lynx sounds quite good. Another problem is that, on my PC, the Lynx pushes a spike when the PC powers up and down. If the amp for your tweeters happens to be on at this time, you won't have any tweeters left. A great thing about using the PC as a crossover is that you can also easily perform equalization duties, such as the you would with the DEQ 2496, to mitigate some of the room node problems in the bass region.

Regarding the sound differences between the Lynx 2B and the Benchmark DAC-1, they are very similar in overall quality. I've played with a number of DACs, and the Lynx and Benchmark sound more alike than any other set of DACs I've tried. The Benchmark is slightly cleaner sounding, probably because of it being away from the PC power supply, but from an overall sound quality perspective, they are very close. If you like this type of sound, the Lynx is a bargain because of its six DAC channels. Unfortunately for me, a recent speaker upgrade has left me needing to find another solution for PC audio, as neither the Lynx nor the Benchmark are fitting well; but it might instead be EMI / RFI from the computer that is causing the issues. Nevertheless, I am back to my SACD player on the main system for the time being.

Alan
