The Toslink definitely adds jitter and the Monarchy does a mediocre job of removing it.

If you dont buffer the output of the D/A chip in the Behringer, then you are probably not getting the dynamics in the recording or HF extension. Connecting directly to the D/A output does reduce noise from op-amps etc. by eliminating them, but it has the downside of inability to properly drive the cables to the preamp, in terms of both capacitance and the transmission-line effects. A low-impedance source driver is required for good results, one that is relatively immune to transmission-line effects.

Do you capacitively couple the output of the Behringer? If so, then the selection and values of these caps is critical as well. Caps with high dielectric absorption can easily cause compression and the wrong combination or values can cause high-frequency compression, which sounds just like HF roll-off.

Most audiophiles are shocked at how much noise and sibilance is generated in their systems. They only discover this after it is removed.
