Over the course of several days and with several recordings I compared Wave Editor to iTunes and bottom line; sounds the same to me. Granted there are too many variables to even consider, but on my system I believe they sound the same. Perhaps the fact that they both go through core audio set to 24/96 output negates any differences?

iMac > audio/midi set to 24/96 > toslink > Monarchy DIP reclocker > AES > modified Behringer DCX2496 > MSB multichannel volume control > triamped w/ SET amps > Avantgarde Duo Omega with custom bass horns.

Recordings:

Mozart violin concerto from HiRes Download test site, 24/96 wav coverted to apple lossless for iTunes and native for Wave Editor

Ry Cooder, "A Meeting By The River" CD ripped by iTunes to Apple lossless and imported by Wave Editor, title track

Del McCoury "Del and the Boys" CD same as above, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning"

Holly Cole "Holly Cole" downloaded 16/44.1 AIFF from HDTracks and played AIFF on both. "This House is Haunted"

I know some will say that with toslink and a Behringer all bets are off, but having horns from 40Hz on up is something you need to hear. The weak part of the Behringer is the analog section which is bypassed, and it allows me to triamp and time align the drivers. I fill out the bottom from 20-40 with the Avantgarde woofers to make it full range.

I know this hardly a scientific method so I'm open to suggestions and willing to retry it if someone can suggest a better method for comparing the software.
