For the record - eventually went with the M-Audio Transit, and bought a pair of Equation Audio RP-21 headphones (32 ohm imp.), which are easily and nicely driven by it. Along the way listened to the accurate Sennheiser HD280 Pro (64 ohm imp.), which either because of the lack of amplification or its inherent sound characteristics, lacked the "presence" and depth (soundstage, perhaps, is the term) of the RP-21's sound.
