My wife's laptop had the same issue. All of a sudden the DVD/CD writer "disappeared" and had the silly icon in the Device Manager list. Here's what Tech Support told me to do to fix the problem:

Click the Start button, type regedit in the run box, and then click OK.

In Registry Editor, expand the following registry path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Note: To expand the registry path, click the arrow symbol that appears next to the appropriate node in the left pane. When the arrow symbol is clicked, it changes to a downward pointing arrow symbol. The node is expanded, and the appropriate registry subkeys are displayed under the node. In the Registry Editor, the registry subkeys appear as folders.

Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Note: several components had this same "listing", so I had to click on more than one to find the DVD writer.

In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.

Click Yes when prompted to delete the registry value.

In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.

Click Yes when prompted to delete the registry value.

Quit Registry Editor by clicking Exit on the File menu.

Restart the computer.

The DVD/CD writer problem is now fixed.
