I tried what you suggested and the result was

Cannot Install This Hardware

The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary hardware.

I am beginning to think this might be related to XP Service Pack 3, which I applied a few weeks ago.

Of course, like most computers these days, this one came with the OS preinstalled, so running a repair is a PITA with no disc. But I think that is what it is going to take.

Should have never switched over from Macintosh.
