I have worked on this product, and have one at home. I have posted about it the post below:http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/pcaudio/messages/3/31045.html
There have been no major incidence of security compromise if the server is used as it is configured out of the box. But that security comes at a price of limited options for connecting from the outside. From outside your home network you are currently limited to photo sharing, accessing your files from a web page, and possibly remotely connecting to the PCs in your home. It does not directly support music and video streaming outside your home network.
Inside your home you can share music and video with any devices that can access the UPNP protocal that it provides. This is mainly limited to Windows Media Connect devices, HP Mediasmart devices, Xbox and Sony Playstation 3. And you are limited to MP3s, WMA, MP4 for music, and WMV and AVI, MPG for video.
There is also an iTunes server you can use to share iTunes in the home (but not outside of it)(and connect a Squeezebox). Or inside the home you can connect to it as a normal share drive, which just about anything computer can connect to. I connect with my other PCs and my mac this way. Using it as a share drive there is no limitation as to the kinds of file you can share, so you can use FLAC etc. and connect a Squeezebox to it as well.
