You should be careful about emu software and ceratinly not install the hundreds of MB of 'extra software'. If you use it run a lean machine.
The Lynx aes16 is the only card I know off that deos twin wire aes, allowing connection to high class dacs and processors.
Like you, I find that all cards sound different, putting paid to this business of 'perfect bits are perfect'. I find buffer sizes, process priority and other settings to have an effect.
I have come to the conclusion that all card spdifs need relocking and have a modified Apogee Big Ben. I don't use word clock link beause I have found that they don't sound any better and are just as susceptible to cabling and termination as spdif. The Lynx, for example has a dodgy Synchroloc and the output sampling rate at 192k is 800 ppm out in my system! It will not even lock onto a nominal 20 ppm WC output in a rock solid manner. Like all PC people, you rarely get a constructive answer to queries about performance issues such as these, only a reiteration of how bloody marvellous the hardware is! I2S is touted as ideal but even I2S links are cable sensitive and may not sound better (yes, I was very early adopter of the improved I2S 13W link).
So, take your pick but I believe that good clocks, relocking, and quiet power supplies are essential.
