Good SPDIF source, mods?

I have tried many cdp, dvdp players, the Transporter, EMU 0404 and X-Fi cards. They all sound different as transports into my Benchmark DAC1 and MF A324 using the same glass toslink.

I am tempted to give the 1212M a try but I am curious if anyone has found anything breathtaking out there as far as soundcards go. Is Lynx really that much better than everything else out there as a transport or is the popularity due to its good D/A stage? Any cheapo dark horses, pro gear or older classic gear that would give the new stuff run for their money?

Are there any mods that could be done to improve the spdif output (other than supeclocks etc)?
