It's a hardware issue, not an issue with the USB protocol. It depends on the USB chipset the Vaio uses.

If you want "mission critical" USB audio, get yourself a Sun Microsystems Ultra 20 workstation. I gurantee you won't get schotty response from that machine. They cost about $900 as a starting point.

Chipsets matter, I happen to have problems with the lesser chipset manufacturers (broadcom etc...), no doubt Sony products have been declining in quality, I see that that problem has translated to their computers as well.

As mentioned below: Perhaps buying a good quality USB controller card and installing that will solve the problem. I would recommend only going with an Intel chipset. My experience with these integrated usb motherboard plugs has been less than ideal.
