It isn't a front-or-back issue on the placement of the USB cable. The underlying technical issue is, "what else is sharing that particurlar USB controller along with your Emu. I suspect your motherboard has 2 separate USB controller chips and you've been using one with no other devices connected to it.

By 'other devices', I'm including anything that's in use on the motherboard itself. You'll have to go into Device Manager in Windows to determine what's on what controller. I find the documentation provided PC vendors to be woefully lacking in this regard prior to sale, too.

My overall suggestion is to purchase your own PCI-to-USB controller board and install it in your PC. If you're using a laptop, all the more reason to isolate your audio interface on its own PCMCIA-to-USB controller. Until I did this with my gear, I had all sorts of gremlins.
