$300 will get you going with a Squeezebox 3 ($400 for the new Duet combo with the fancy remote).

You've already got the computers for music storage. The Squeezebox software comes in a version for Macs and the Squeezebox supports the Apple music file format (both lossy & lossless.)

You can run multiple Squeezeboxes with different music for each room or you can sync them. The Squeezeboxes are also easily upgradeable with mods and external DACs if you want to go the audiophile route. However, the basic model has awfully good performance for the price.

Squeezebox also has fantastic community support through their active users forum (see link below.) Most of the questions you have or problems you might run into have likely already been seen and addressed by others.

If you just want to listen to music and manage a big library (I'm currently over 32,000 tunes) I think it is hard to beat.
