Thanks, Tom. This very helpful. I've been through part of this process using the ($40) iMic. While this made me excited about the idea of doing more, it's pretty clear I a more capable ADC. The sound was just too flat -- although I'm sure I have more to learn about getting Audacity settings right.

I have my main preamp outputs as well if I need more boost than the phono preamp can provide.
