My AVM preamplifier is a full function analog preamp. I use it here just for the MC phono stage, taking the equalized analog signal from the tape outs (signal from the pre-outs is much worse due to the volume controls) via analog interconnects to the line-ins on the Terratec. The TT Producer does the A/D conversion at 16/44.1 (max: 24/48 but I use 44.1 and use the '32bit floating point' on Audacity - set at 'preferences - audio quality')
"If I have already a good phono pre -- might I go straight to the unit's ADC out the existing (MC in this case) phono pre?"
yes! make sure the phono pre has enough (output: line level) gain.
