Perhaps you're right and I don't really get it.I am not really talking about compressing things here.
I try to explain it
Lets assume you would have a natural uncompressed recording signal running
in the range of 84db. 1:1 recording. This would easily fit into a 16bit
frame. Now you're lifting things lets say 18db up. Now the same sound
is played at 102db ( 3bits left for noise - in line with your systems noise floor). This is what I call gain adjust. And you lifted the signal away from the noise floor. If my volume control stays at the same position we got a much louder signal assuming a typical listening volume of 85db. You need to get it down again with your volumecontrol. Of course on the digital side it remains staying away from the noise floor. What I am saying is that all the new fashioned recordings are adding at least 6db more gain to the recording compared to the past. I am just saying this doesn't always sound right to me. Perhaps I am wrong here,
or my system is just not able to cope with a higher dynamic range than 96db.And if the noise is on the recording itself you'd just lifting it up, except you got a real good de-noiser. Keep your fingers crossed that
you don't loose details in the "noise" you're cleaning up.Cheers
