As another point of comparison, take a look at Amazon.com. They've gone into the mp3 download business in a big way. All of their download offerings (they still sell CD's of course) are provided at 256 kbps VBR. I see that Melody Gardot's mp3 version is being offered at $5.99 as she's a new act. Joni Mitchell's new Shine album is at $8.99 as a download.
Possibly a better comparison is the All About Jazz (AAJ) website. They carry, like, Small Records and Ropeadope and many download albums are priced at $9.99. Donald Harrison on the CTI Jazz Online label is priced at $12.99. Their downloads are at 320kbps VBR. Both Amazon and AAJ provide downloads without DRM.
For me, these compressed versions don't really make it except as a 'preview' of the music. If it's something I really like, I'll go ahead and order it on CD or LP. The mp3 version is a convenience however; something like listening to the radio, perhaps. There's a place for it, but it's always a disappointment compared to what's possible on CD and higher formats.
There is variation in the quality among different recordings in mp3 format. I like whatever it is that Daptone did with the mp3 version of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. I don't know what the magic is there, but definitely some releases make it to mp3 in better shape than others.
